Tourism Queensland is now accepting applications for the “Best Job in the World”: caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. The successful applicant will be based on Hamilton Island, the largest inhabited island in the region just off the coast of Queensland, Australia.
What are the key responsibilities of this position?
Well, basically, to enjoy the resources of the islands, and document and report your discoveries via photo diaries, blogs, video updates and other online vehicles to the world at large.
This must pay dirt, right? Who wouldn’t want to go explore a few tropical islands?
Actually, the six-month contract comes with a salary of $150,000 AUD (that’s roughly $100,000 USD), not to mention free housing on the island, travel insurance, computer and camera gear and paid airfare from the winning applicant’s home country.
Any particular qualifications needed?
Not really. Mainly you need an interest in island activities like snorkeling, SCUBA diving, swimming, sailing, and exploring. And don’t forget communication skills, seeing as you’ll be reporting to the world about your experience.
Applications are open until February 22nd, and the position begins July 1st, 2009. Check out the official website at http://www.islandreefjob.com. (At the time of writing, the site is down, probably due to applicants pouring in from around the world!)
Sounds like a great opportunity for one lucky individual, and a pretty savvy marketing ploy for Tourism Queensland.
