Top Ways to Attract a Mate While Traveling

Gear Guide — By Tyler Renaghan on June 11, 2009 at 9:52 am

Traveling alone can be exhilarating, scary, and extremely introspective.  But sometimes people travel alone for different reasons.  Going on a trip to a foreign land, single, is a great way to meet people and to experience and try new things.  There are a bunch of ways to get attention when traveling as a single in a foreign country: you can wear a button-down emblazoned with your country’s flag, join a Pub Crawl and have one too many grappas, or carry your camera around your neck and ask unsuspecting locals to snap a photo of you holding up the Tower of Pisa.

If those ‘wahoo’ antics don’t suit your GQ, James Bond-esque, style of turning heads, don’t worry, I’ve put together a short list of tips, tactics, and sweet gear guaranteed to spark a conversation…maybe more if you play your cards right.

  1. Use your eyes – Some say the eyes are the windows to your soul, eyes never lie, some even fall in love at first sight.  Guess what, it’s all true!  If you’re truly interested in meeting/talking to someone, make eye contact.  Enjoy an espresso at Caffe della Pace and keep your eyes peeled for anyone else looking your way – when your eyes meet, smile and nod…you’ll be surprised at how far a little eye contact can get you.
  2. NileGuide's iPhone App

Flaunt your iPhone – Some of you reading this might think that the novelty of the iPhone has worn off, but believe me, the amount of cool stuff this phone can do while traveling will surely impress.  While wandering the streets of Prague, put on the lost puppy dog face, whip out the iPhone, open up map in the Guide to Go app (shameless plug) and ask the next pretty lady or stunning man if they can point you in the right direction.  They’ll be impressed that it’s an iPhone, that you’ve mustered the courage to ask, and that it’s an iPhone!  Maybe they’ll offer to escort you to your next destination…remember that the iPhone also takes excellent photos.

  3. Pick up lines – I know what you’re thinking, pick up lines are cheesy and they simply don’t work.  BUT, have you ever tried using a pick up line in the language of the place you’re in?  If you find yourself in Cabo, Lima, or Rio, try this one out: YOU: ¿Dolió? HER: ¿Como? YOU: ¿Dolió cuando usted se cayó de los cielos? HER: Aye Papi! ¡Venga aquí! Leave a comment if you’d like another translation.
  4. Shark Attack!Rock a HOT Swimsuit – Now that summer is upon us, at least in the Northern hemisphere, it’s time to show off that rock hard speedo/bikini body you’ve worked so hard for over the winter months.  If you’re catching some rays on Waikiki beach, go with a classy one piece or a knee length board short for a more reserved approach.  But if you cut those Bon Bon’s out like a bad habit in anticipation of Rehab at the Hard Rock Pool in Vegas, then throw on that new Dior bikini or a pair of short shorts by Vilebrequin…those who know fine sun-tanning will appreciate your choice of swimwear.

Have any other tips on how to turn heads while on a ‘Han-Solo’ mission?  Leave a comment and we’ll keep this list going!

Love this…the only thing I would add is a TAN….if you are planning on traveling solo to a warm place a tan is a must. You don’t want to be single without a tan.

I’m heading down to Irvine for a water polo tournament this weekend, and I think I’ll try to use all of Tyler’s suggestions.
    1. Eyes: Who doesn’t look good in a pair of goggles? Check.
    2. iPhone: no one has a pool on deck. Also, I don’t have an iPhone. N/A
    3. Pick up line: “So what size speedo do you wear?”
    4. Swimsuit: (the team suit we chose for this year) Check.
