Eat With A Musician… Or Just Eat Like One

Around the World, Food Lovers — By NileGuide staff on July 6, 2009 at 7:02 am

Eating and drinking have historically gone very well with a side of music.  Some of the musically inclined simply become notorious for their favorite dishes (peanut butter and banana sandwiches, anyone?) but a few actually make forays into the restaurant and bar businesses.  Moby, Britney Spears, and Jennifer Lopez have all launched restaurants in the past, but here are a couple of my personal favorites:

  • Lario’s on the Beach Singer Gloria Estefan is the musical mind behind this surprisingly affordable Cuban restaurant in Miami.  Enjoy the views both on the beach and inside the dining room, and be sure to order the classic ‘Arroz con Pollo.’
  • 40/40 Club Hip-hop is the soundtrack at this New York City sports bar. Owner Jay-Z named it after the prestigious ‘club’ of baseball players to achieve 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases.  They do serve up some delicious dishes, but this is a place to watch the game and listen to music.

Maybe you don’t care if you run into a rockstar at dinner. Maybe you just want to feel like a rockstar.  Well, I’ve got the perfect spot for you: Kuma’s Corner.  This tiny spot in the Northwest corner of Chicago wants to rock your socks off with heavy metal tracks played at top volume, pierced-and-tattooed waitstaff, and some gnarly burgers.  I’m partial to the Greek-leaning ‘Motorhead’ burger, but take your pick: Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Slayer… they’re all there.  Still don’t believe me? Kuma’s was rated one of the top ten burgers in America by Playboy Magazine.

How do you rock out with your fork out? Let me know in the comments section!

I saw MC Hammer at Mr. Lucky’s 24/7 Diner in Las Vegas…does that count?

  • @Tyler: Sure, why not? A restaurant open 24/7 is definitely catering to the rockstar crowd!

I don’t know if this is the same as with music, but I know that with Theater, the key to eating with the actors is finding a place open late near the venue, not too fancy but never trashy, with good food and decently priced drinks. Show up an hour after curtain and get ready to hear some really interesting discussions on monetizing someone’s life’s work. ;)
