Music on the Go

Gear Guide — By Tyler Renaghan on July 9, 2009 at 9:33 am

Do you love music?  Enjoying different types of music from the places you visit is a great way to soak up the culture.  If you’ve got your own brand of tunes, be sure to find a way to share with the locals.  The Grand Piano, Upright Bass, and Baritone Sax are a little too big to travel with on your worldly adventures, but don’t be discouraged, check out a few perfect ‘on the go’ sized instruments that can easily fit into your jean pocket or slide snugly into your pack.

  1. Be a Blues Brother

Harmonica – If you’re stuck in Grand Central Terminal with no cash, flip your hat inside out and start blowin’ some blues tunes on your trusty harmonica.  It’s small enough to fit in any pocket, and all you need is some air, the stomp of your foot, and some dark Ray Ban sunglasses to get into character.  Play your heart out and you should gather enough tips to get you one or two stops in the right direction.

  2. Livin' on a prayer!

Ukulele - Picture the iconic black and white photo of a drifter rockin torn jeans, a leather jacket with a popped collar, and hard lines cutting marks of accomplishment or defeat into his tan leather face.  Wouldn’t that be cool if you could be that guy?  Well, now you can, just on a miniature scale when you ditch your Les Paul for a Hawaiian print Ukulele.  Trade in the Bon Jovi monster ballad for some traditional Bruddah Iz style Hawaiian tunes.

  3. Not just child's play

Kazoo – Don’t let the stereo-type of the Kazoo fool you.  Just because it’s typically found at birthday parties ranging from ages 4-8 doesn’t mean the only song you can play on it is ‘Happy Birthday’.  If you can sing, hum, and exhale all at the same time then you’re already a Kazoo professional.  Next time you’re at a cafe or bar pull out a 12 pack of Kazoos for you and all your new comrades to get the party started…I guarantee you’ll be the center of attention.

Know of any other instruments that can be taken on the road?  Let us know in the comments section below.

    You forgot the keytar.

There’s something universal about a keyboard that is also a guitar. Cultural – and language – barriers blur when someone is able to bust out a techno version of “We are the world” at a bonfire on the beach. Guaranteed.

God BLESS you! I travel with my uke all the time, everywhere. It fits in the overhead and really takes up no more space in my kit than a tennis racket. But hey, there’s no reason to forgo the Bon Jovi, just rock that uke, man, rock that uke.

Thanks Pam! Your Uke love is infectious! I like your style…keep on rockin’ in the free world…Uke style.
