A plugged in hotel or destination is no longer just the travel requisite of jet-setting geeks the world over – celebrities of all levels now expect gadget-friendly amenities stars of the past would have scoffed at. Attracting the rich, famous, and hangers-on, plugged in hotels and restaurants are showing off their latest and greatest tech goodies to an attentive – and lucrative – audience.
Doug Newcomb of MSN Tech & Gadgets recently attended Lollapalooza 2009, and was amazed at the concentration of rock stars at his tech hotel of choice, The James Chicago. Doug marveled at the hotel’s tech enhancements, including flat screens, iPod docks, and a ‘media room’ home theater, including an LCD projector! He was also pretty psyched when he saw Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs in the lobby…
In Los Angeles, there are plenty of high-end hotels available to quench both your star-gazing and tech-addicted sides. The Chateau Marmont, where the recent meltdowns of Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears threaten to overshadow the establishment’s stellar history, takes tech luxury to a new level. In addition to standard 42 inch LCD televisions with HDTV and iPod docking stations, the Chateau Marmont can provide you with a new cell phone upon request – for those avoiding prying eyes – as well as state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment. No wonder singers like Lily Allen are rumored to have written a tune or two there.
If you’re in the mood to soak up some sun, but need to be plugged in while being pampered, join Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Mandy Moore, Eva Longoria, and (YES!) Celine Dion at the One & Only Palmilla in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Here, the resort’s technology is designed to make you forget that there’s any technology at all. Carefully positioned aromas and room lighting compliment Palmilla’s fine linens and (in their words) “mesmerizing music”. Standard in-room technology includes Bose surround audio and a telescope for whale-watching, only a few of the tech amenities that celebrity guests have come to expect. For those who can’t leave the computer at home, there is WiFi throughout the entire resort. (Palmilla celebrity sightings courtesy of Hotels of the Rich and Famous.)
Want to get away from the gadgets completely? Turn off the Wii, leave the iPhone at home and follow America’s First Family to the Grand Canyon. This past weekend, Barack and Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia Obama strolled along the South Rim to Hopi Point – a perfect tech-free end of summer trip for any child on break! Also check out LA Times’ Maeve Reston’s overview of the First Daughters’ summer adventures.
