Raw Foodies

I think it’s fairly safe to say that most of the things that foodies eat would make raw foodists faint (all the cooked organ meats, breads, pastas, etc).  But in the spirit of spa and health week, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at what followers call the healthiest food movement.  Not being much of a raw foods expert I spent some time over at RawFoodLife.com, which has a huge amount of literature on the subject. So, why raw food? I’ve listed nine reasons after the jump…

RawFoodLife lists the following reasons for a raw food livestyle:

  1. Raw foods carry electrochemical energy and nutritional messages that vibrate with frequencies that energize your body (any chemists out there want to chime in on the validity of this one?).
  2. Raw food contain all the original vitamins, minerals and essential enzymes which are easily destroyed by heat.
  3. Eating raw foods builds your immune system.
  4. Heating oils, animal fats, nuts and seeds creates toxic substances harmful  to the body.
  5. Eating raw foods gives you more energy.
  6. You look healthier on a raw food diet.
  7. You can lose weight quickly and easily.
  8. People heal chronic diseases by eating raw foods, often in addition to fasting, juicing, exercising and meditating.
  9. It tastes better because a raw food diet cleanses the palate.

I’ve never tried a raw food diet but just point #9 seems interesting to me; would a raw food diet help improve the palate for wine tasting?  At any rate, here are three restaurants where you can try raw food cuisine without breaking out the salad spinner at home:

  • I once had an illuminating 20 minute conversation with a chef I met in Trader Joe’s about the heating point of olive oil, and why cooking with it creates more carcinogens than with grapeseed or canola oils. It kind of scared me.

    So, yes, I think that raw foodists make some good points about the ways that certain cooking methods deplete the nutritional benefits of fruits, vegetables and grains, and can even be harmful to our health. Michael Pollan’s “In Defense of Food” also promotes the idea of eating with a macrobiotic focus, which is interesting in the context of the different cultural diets he examines.

    That being said, I’d have a hard time sticking to a purely raw diet. I really, really love toast.

  • @Alexi, the oil one is an interesting one. Nick and I get in fights over which oil is appropriate to use for different cooking applications.

    I’d have a really hard time sticking to raw diet too. Michael Pollan really made me re-examine my food habits and I do try to form the larger portion of my diet around foods and preparations that have lasted in cultures through many generations. But raw… probably not happening for me!

  • Thank you for pointing out the benefits of raw food. I have been enjoying raw food for years, I think it is a real shame to cook away all the nutritional value.

    Give me cool, crunchy salads and fresh tuna/salmon sashimi all summer long and I’m a happy girl. Ask me again in the fall and I will be craving the warmth of hearty soups and roasted vegetables. : ) I certainly couldn’t live off of a raw food diet.

    I went to a naturopath a few weeks ago and she advised against raw diets saying that they can be harder on your digestion system because our stomach has to work hard at digesting raw foods. I’m a believer of everything in moderation and doing what suits your body.

    My stepmum and dad have started their dogs and cats on an organic/raw food diet of organic beef and chicken…I guess a raw food diet for animals makes a lot of sense

    A friend who has terminal breast cancer switched to a diet of only raw food and has shared some wonderful ‘baked’ goods that would tempt just about anyone. She feels it has helped her with her energy levels and overall health.
