Romantic Restaurants from London to NYC

Around the World, Food Lovers, Romantic — By Amy Widdowson on February 1, 2010 at 12:20 pm

OpenTable recently released their list of the top romantic restaurants around the world as voted by diners.  While I don’t necessarily disagree with them, I thought we would turn to the fantastic NileGuide team to see where they’d like to take their sweetheart for some Valentine’s dining – enjoy!:

  • Atlantic CityThe Knife and Fork Inn
Local Expert Melody M in New Jersey thinks that the Knife & Fork Inn Restaurant in Atlantic City is “definitely romantic”, despite the fact it started as a men’s club in 1912. Melody writes: Today the restaurant’s atmosphere captures the style of the the place’s Prohibition era roots, with rich mahogany millwork, hand-painted ceilings, and a sweeping staircase and balcony. They serve steak and seafood prepared on a wood-fired grill and have a 10,000-bottle wine “cellar” (on the third floor).” Perfect place to wine, dine, and wow.
  • New York CityTamarind
When Director of Product Management Tanuka R visits New York, she votes for Tamarind as a modern, trendy spot to take your Valentine.
  • Washington DCOld Angler’s Inn
Local Expert Torie C in Washington DC loves the out-of-the-way location of Old Angler’s Inn. She writes “the rural beauty… and its intimate atmosphere (and sophisticated menu) make a perfect backdrop for romance”.
  • Vancouver BCPourhouse
Wandering the cobblestone streets of Gastown in Vancouver can lead to romantic interludes a la the turn of the century. When Local Expert Natasha J’s Valentine asked her where she wanted to go, she “scratched [her] head” and decided they’re going to the Pourhouse, where the “décor is as beautiful as the menu”.
  • Orange CountyC’est la Vie
Looking for ocean views with “slow-ish” service that is “perfect for romance”? Local Expert Chris A.
recommends you check out this cozy eatery in Laguna Beach.
  • Cartegena La Vitrola
Our Chief Operation Officer, John M, loves La Vitrola in Cartegena, Columbia, and encourages anyone in the region to visit this “classic colonial style restaurant located in the heart of the walled city, with distinctive Cuban flavor.  Both the service and food are impeccable.  It’s like going back into another world.  Finish the evening with a walk along the city walls or a drink at the top of one of the classic hotels with a view of the Caribbean.”
  • Salt Lake City Region – Tree Room
If you find yourself looking for some romance in Sundance, Local Expert Amiee M says that her Valentine’s Dream Date would be at the Tree Room. “The restaurant is located up Provo Canyon on the 6000 acres of pristine wilderness at Sundance Resort. New western cuisine using in-season local organic produce is served by candlelight with a rustic, earthy ambiance decorated with Native American Art from Robert Redford’s personal collection.” She says she’d follow it with a moonlit stroll – sounds perfect!
  • London Amaya
Local Expert Erin M in London describes herself as an “Anti-Valentiner” but chose anyways – Michelin-rated Amaya is her choice for their “sleek and sexy” décor and “stunning little tasting portions”, as sharing “goes along with being romantic!”. You can find Amaya in the Belgravia neighborhood.
  • Granada El Huerto de Juan Ranas
    Dave S
, Director of Software Development, swears by El Huerto de Juan Ranas in Granada. He says: “Walk up and down the hill, through the neighborhood that’s Granada’s principal sight outside the Alhambra. There are even nice nuns with good convent pastries at the bottom of the hill, so you’ll have something to do with your date before and/or after lunch.”
  • Istanbul Sunset Bar Grill & Bar
With a large menu and spectacular cocktails, Sunset Grill & Bar is Local Expert Aysegul S’s top choice for an intimate meal. She says that while the service can sometimes be hit-or-miss, the view in the summer while seated in the hills of Borphorus is “very, very romantic”.
  • Oslo Klosteret
Our Local Expert in Oslo, Sophie R.,  may have submitted the most subterranean setting yet – she recommends Klosteret’s “cellar with a vaulted ceiling… lit entirely with candles, hundreds of them!”. Sounds spooky / sexy!
  • ChicagoSignature Room at the 95th Floor
If a spectacular view and comfy chairs above the Windy City spells romance to you, our Local Expert Adriana M in Chicago suggests the Signature Room at the 95th Floor. She writes “the floor-to-ceiling windows look out over the sparkling Magnificent Mile, creating the perfect romantic setting”.
  • ShanghaiSky Lounge
Another top-of-the-world experience can be had in Shanghai at the Sky Lounge. Local expert Lauren J says the low lighting and great drinks work nicely for “lovers who really want to enjoy each other.”
  • Canadian RockiesGrizzly House
Personally, my choice for a romantic fondue joint doesn’t fall into the Melting Pot range. If you and yours are the more adventurous type, dipping buffalo, wild boar, shark, alligator, and rattlesnake in a variety of hot oils will certainly get your mojo working.
  • Finally – wanna be the greatest girlfriend / fiancée / wife ever? Business Manager Victoria G recommends Hooters for a Valentine’s Night out, because “it shows your man you care”.

I’m sure you all have local recommendations for romance – leave ’em in the comments!
