Australian wine has been getting a bad rap lately. Poor quality, ‘critter’ wines, an absolute glut of unsold wine… we’ve all read the news articles. But the truth is, Australia‘s diversity in geography, weather, and people make it able to produce an incredibly wide range of wines. But how to learn about them all?
As a wine scholar-in-training, I know that a lot of the wine books out there are just, well, too dense. Thankfully, the fun folks at Tourism Australia (wouldn’t you be a fun person if you talked about Australia all day too?) alerted me to this genius feature on their site: the Wine Australia Regional Heroes Tasting Challenge. You get to take a tour of the Australian wine growing regions, compare wines, use a very useful tasting chart, and then take a quiz. But this isn’t just any quiz… it’s a visually entertaining test that uses your newly-gained wine knowledge to pick out the prevalent tastes/aromas for wines such as Yarra Valley Chardonnay, Barossa Valley Shiraz, Tasmania Pinot Noir, and more. A word to the wise: the fantastic animation on the site makes it a bit slow, but I promise the wait is worth it.
If you don’t do your homework, you’ll end up being told “You may need a little more time in oak. Mature some and try again.” A quiz with a sense of humor! But here’s the kicker: score 80% or better, and you’re entered to win a free trip to Australia.
Take the test, send it to your friends, and let me know how you did in the comments section!
