Need a Passport? Mark Your Calendar: March 27

Travel News — By Molly McGonigle on March 16, 2010 at 8:31 am

March 27th is the United States’ inauguration of ‘Passport Day’. What does this mean for you, if you’re an American who either constantly travels or wish you were traveling?

Passport offices across the country will be extending their hours on Saturday, the 27th to assist the many Americans looking to apply for or renew their passports. The best part of this event is that because this holiday is open to everyone, you won’t need an appointment to receive the services of the passport office. Also, since you won’t be surrounded by people hoping to get their passport for their trip next week, the experience should be relatively painless and hassle-free.

If you don’t live near a passport office, which tend to be located in big US cities, don’t worry. There are still some options for you to celebrate this new holiday. Your local post office will be available to provide you with all of the tools necessary to get a new passport or renew an expired one.

And as always when dealing with the post office or the passport office, remember the earlier you get there, the better spot you will get in line. Additionally, it might be in your best interest to print out the application and fill it out beforehand. That way if you have any questions you know ahead of time. And don’t forget your proper proof of American citizenship, either a birth certificate or a previous passport.
