Indonesian Police Chief: No Penis Enlargement For My Cops

Applicants to Indonesia’s police and military will now face some very personal questions about their sex lives and sex organs before they will be allowed to serve and protect.  Papua police chief Bekto Suprapto says every applicant “will be asked whether or not his vital organ has been enlarged. … and if he has, he will be considered unfit to join the police or the military.”  The ban was applied since the unnatural size causes “hindrance during training,” said police spokesman Zainuri Lubis in Jakarta.  (Makes you wonder what exactly Indonesian police training entails, doesn’t it?) Chief Suprapto also said that candidates who have contracted sexually-transmitted diseases, including HIV, AIDS, “and a number of other diseases” would also not be allowed to join the police or military.

Sexologist Dr. Boyke Dian Nugraha says that Papuans use a local technique to achieve the enlargement, wrapping the penis with leaves from the “gatal-gatal” (itchy) tree so that it swells up “like it has been stung by a bee.”

Reuters reports that “Indonesia’s remote easternmost province is home to Papuan tribes, many of whom are known for wearing penis gourds.”  Times Online describes the gourd or koteka as “a hollowed-out gourd attached to the scrotum and the traditional dress of the tribesmen of the Papuan highlands.”

If you’re interested in getting your own penis gourd (Father’s Day is coming up, after all), Lonely Planet has a forum about where to find them and how to claim them on customs forms.
