Twitter World Leaders: Spears, Kutcher, Obama, and JetBlue?

This past weekend was a huge and historic one in the 140-character world of Twitter.  Sometime Sunday night, Britney Spears (@BritneySpears) became Twitter’s most followed tweeter, surpassing Austin Kutcher (@aplusk) with somewhere in the neighborhood of 4.95 million followers.  The day before, Information Architects unveiled its list of the 140 most influential people on twitter in the form of a ginormous pdf infographic “sorted by #name #handle #category #influence #activity.”

President Barrack Obama ranks 4th in twitter followers (he’s around 4 million and also trails Ellen DeGeneres), but he was named most influential by iA — so he’s not only the leader of the free world, but the most influential tweeter.  Because politics borders business in the infographic, just to the right of the President is JetBlue Airways (@jetblue).  JetBlue and President Obama both began tweeting in 2007.  Going clockwise from politics, the graphic also covers humor, sports, music, entertainment, intellectuals, art & design, technology, news and journalism.

Believed to have missed the top 140 by the narrowest of margins are @nileguide (1,997 [Ed. note: We’re up to 2,003 followers! Yay!) and @dichalk (289 followers).

Other notables who did make the top 140 include:Star Trek: The Next Generation child star Wil Wheaton

  • film director Kevin Smith
  • actress Demi Moore (@mrskutcher)
  • Who’s The Boss child star Alyssa Milano (who tweets some pretty odd stuff)
  • deposed talk show host Conan O’Brien
  • NASA
  • Anderson Cooper
  • Al Gore
  • MC Hammer
  • Shaquille O’Neal
  • Lady Gaga
  • Mariah Carey
  • Paris Hilton
  • Perez Hilton
  • Kim Kardashian
