Spirit Sells Ad Space On Airplane ‘Barf Bags’
Travel News — By Jules Auger on May 27, 2010 at 8:00 amThrowing up is simply no fun. The waves of nausea, the knowledge that soon, that nine dollar airport sandwich will be coming back up in the least enjoyable form known to man, and the painful dry heaves that seal the deal all come together to make for one miserable plane ride.
When it actually comes to the dirty deed, most simply like to get it over with and consider it a thing of the past, yet Spirit Airlines, ever the innovator, continues to sell advertising space on some of the most downright bizarre places. When it comes to throwing up, eyes tend to stay closed and clenched – should one choose to open them, however, Spirit intends to get those with the money to invest a spot on one of the first places you’ll see.
In another interesting advertising tactic, Spirit has chosen to give those interested the chance to place their ads on the colloquially called ‘barf bags’, ready to be used by those with weak stomachs. Advertising on airplanes is nothing new. It’s not uncommon to see credit card companies advertise on overhead bins, and Spirit Airlines has no problem selling ever piece of available space on their aircraft to those with enough money to afford it – after all, there aren’t many places to look in a plane.
As always, the most business-savvy tend to come out on top in the long run. What one needs to ask themselves, however – is this the beginning of an era in which flights are cheaper thanks to advertising dollars, or are we entering an age in which no empty space is devoid of an ad?

While clever this is nothing new – back in the 8o’s (showing my age again) I remember flying on an airline where the ‘barf-bags’ doubled as mail-in photo processing envelopes … brings a new twist to full color printing!
