Blondes on Parade: Guaranteed Way to Boost… the Economy?

Offbeat, Travel News — By Ben Van Loon on June 2, 2010 at 10:23 am

May 28th and 29th marked the first annual “Go Blonde” festival in the capital city of Riga, Lativa. The theme of the event was neither political or racial in nature, but was held merely to “Make the world a brighter place,” and a country like Latvia, who has happened upon dire economic straits over the past few years, has been in desperate need of some brightening.

While Jane Russell might have been on the defensive over the course of the event, the Latvian Blondes Association insists that it was all in good fun. Even a female 70 year-old spectator responded positively, claiming that the Go Blonde festival was “finally, something positive [...] I just can’t stand listening to people talk about the crisis anymore.”

The crisis to which she is referring is in the wake of the more internationally reported Latvian Bailout, which involved the International Monetary Fund ‘awarding’ Latvia 7.5 million euro (roughly 10.5 billion USD) in bailout money, all of which are intended to boost the Latvian economy. But, like everywhere else in the world, things are still tenuous, which is what inspired the Latvian Blondes to stand up to the task and do their civic duty, which simply involved hundreds of photo-ops and blonde-related contests, like a Marilyn Monroe look-a-like, best blonde lawyer, and other things subtly Aryan.

So if you’re tired of being the only blonde in a sea of brunettes, consider making Latvia your destination next spring. You’d not only be boosting your own self-esteem, but the economy of Latvia just as well. There is of course the Red-Head Festival and various blues festivals, but perhaps nothing quite as preferred by gentlemen as a festival of blondes.
