Apple in the Sky: Jetstar to Adopt iPad as in-Flight Entertainment

Travel News — By Jules Auger on June 23, 2010 at 10:49 am

Despite criticism of the iPad (the odd choice of name, lack of functionality, awkward size) anyone who has held one in their hands can attest to its all-around awesomeness. Whether it’s because it makes us feel like the future is now, or that we’re on the top of the technological food chain, there’s just something special about the iPad. And it wasn’t long before the travel industry realized its potential.

According to a recent press release from Jetstar, Qantas Airline’s low-budget counterpart, the airline is already looking to make the iPad available to rent as in-flight entertainment. Reportedly, iPads loaded with apps will be available to Jetstar passengers for the price of ten dollars a flight.

In a statement made by Jetstar the iPad will be stocked with

“Games from the iTunes App Store, magazines for the iPad, eBooks from the App store, hundreds of thousands of your favorite third-party apps as well as custom apps released by the airline itself.”

Jetstar’s concept does raise some questions Apple aficionados will undoubtedly be eager to have answered. Will the devices have WiFi capability inside the plane? Will the iPads be well maintained or will they get beat up after being manhandled by unruly kids and careless passengers? What security measures will be needed to make sure no one takes one as a 500-dollar souvenir?

More news on the iPad as in-flight entertainment will continue to come as Jetstar further establishes its plans for tech-savvy customers.
