China to Develop Car-Straddling Bus – Finally

One of the largest and most noticeable side-effects of a large population is, expectedly, larger amounts of traffic congestion. With China’s population climbing towards 1.5 billion, issues with transportation are top of mind. Though some people expect China’s population to level soon, transportation needs must be met.

In response to this, Chinese engineers have developed an ingenious idea to help with the traffic problems – The Car-Straddling Bus. While all of the graphics and designs are still int he conceptual stage, construction is set to begin on a 115-mile track running out of Beijing’s Mentougou District towards the end of this year.

Engadget provides some extra information on the plan – essentially, it will operate similar to a train-line, though it will share the road with two lanes of cars, riding over them like a double-decker bus without a first deck.

ChinaHush also provides a transcription/translation of the video, which explains exactly how efficient the new bus will be to commuters:

“As you all know, the majority vehicle on the road is car, the shortest vehicle is also car. Normally our overpass is 4.5-5.5 m high. The highlight innovation of straddling bus is that it runs above car and under overpass. Its biggest strength is saving road spaces, efficient and high in capacity. It can reduce up to 25-30% traffic jams on main routes. Running at an average 40 km/h, it can take 1200 people at a time, which means 300 passengers per cart.”

Clumsy sentencing aside, the plan is truly unique, and though there will be some rail construction/road modification, the construction and operation of the buses will undoubtedly be cheaper than installing/operating a subway. The website for the bus can be found here (translated).
