Dubai Cracks Down on Blackberries
Travel News — By spencerspellman on August 12, 2010 at 11:01 amIf you’re heading to Dubai in the near future, you maybe disappointed to find out that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is cracking down on Blackberry usage. According to the New Zealand Herald, both residents and visitors to the UAE will be affected by this ‘crackberry crackdown’, which will consist of Blackberry email, messaging and web services in the country coming to a halt starting on October 1.
As a growing international business center and established tourist destination, Dubai would be most affected, because as the New Zealand Herald reports, Dubai International Airport handled over 40 million passengers last year. There were reports that suggested that Saudi Arabia would be following a similar ban, but the country has backed off after regulatory requirements were met. Rather than seeing travelers hurry to their next flight, you may now see them running to the closest internet cafe so they can stay connected.
The UAE’s decision to halt blackberry usage is a result of growing security concerns, the New Zealand Herald reports. The decision would not only affect travelers to the UAE, but also Dubai-based business professionals and a large number of youth who prefer Blackberries because of its secure communication abilities.
