Drive-In ‘Sex-Boxes’ May Spread To Zurich
Germany, Netherlands, Offbeat, Travel News — By David Chalk on September 7, 2010 at 10:31 amZurich‘s new police chief has received “thousands of complaints” from residents about the city’s thriving red light district. So he’s planning a police trip to Germany to check out a possible solution: ‘sex-boxen’, or drive-in boxes where prostitutes can do their thing in relative privacy and safety. The boxes were first used in Holland, and Cologne became the first German city to implement them in 2002, after which they spread to other German cities like Essen.
Jessica Francis of the Swiss daily Blick (translated from German) stresses that the Zurich policemen who are going on this German study trip “do not go for pleasure,” instead they just want to study if something similar can be implemented in their city. In Cologne, the city fenced in an area about the size of a football field, provided a gate and privacy screen, and outlawed filming and photography. After the first three years, they declared the sex-boxen a success, with little violence perpetrated against prostitutes and improved health among sex workers.
Still, it’s hard to picture Richard Gere and Julia Roberts falling in love in one of these:
In an interesting twist, the Zurich police department’s spokesman is really named Reto Casanova. “We can’t get rid of prostitution,” Casanova says, “so have to learn how to control it.”
So far the police department doesn’t have a site in mind for Zurich’s version of the boxes, but they are preparing a report for the city council on their findings.

It’s cool.
What would be these boxes called in America? f**k Boxes?
A bit confused here, will you be the service seeker or provider?
Yeah… We have it all in Holland! Haha!
How come people didn’t think of these ages ago? Brilliant idea. Someone deserves to make a lot of money.
no more voyeurism on lovers lane? DAMN YOU CUBICLE WALLS
they could have a few sex boxes where clients know someone could be watching them … then have a spot for voyeurs to watch, and just charge them a separate admission
Brilliant!!!
Back in the day, we called them “drive-in theaters”…
Whats wrong with paying $25/hr at a motel?
Those drive-in stalls look ugly, but so do the $25/hr motels, and I’ll bet the stalls are easier to clean.
Just add a frothy brush and a hose and you can wash your car after sex.
I love Holland.
The beauty is that the driver side door can not be opened, and the passenger door has access to exit easily if the john gets violent.
Its strange, the idea first spread online from japan when booking only the boxes in europe, or only the rooms ( and this is how http://www.onlyrooms.com started. (The most booked places were easyhotels, which copied the japanese style (Capsule Hotels , which in japan was just a room and nothing else) but then they started putting youtube videos up on the site.
“We can’t get rid of prostitution,” Casanova says, “so have to learn how to control it.”
Why get rid of it? Why control it? Set it free! Unless it’s free, it’s always a fertile ground for other serious criminal activity.
I had similar idea few yrs ago, but for those boxes in drive-in cinemas. Why not let people have their privacy in their own cars while watching a movie? It could be really profitable.
