It’s almost become a rite of passage to have at least one monstrous cell phone bill in your life. Everyone has an outrageous cell phone bill story, whether it was a family bill where the kids were texting too much, downloading too many ring tones and apps or using the phone in another country. Before you know it, you’ve got a cell phone bill on your hands that’s several hundred dollars.

Imagine one mom’s surprise when she got a cell phone bill of almost $10,000! The bill arrived at the Houston mom’s home after her family returned from a trip to the Dead Sea. Switched reports that the $9700 phone bill was a result of her kid’s use of their cell phones during the trip overseas. The kids, 13 and 11, had regularly been using their cell phones to stream music, play games, access Facebook and text message. Although this may  have happened to many travelers, this story is a little bit different, in how the children received alerts regarding roaming charges, but ignored them.

Switched reports that Verizon knocked off $4,000, to bring the bill to below $5,000; although it wasn’t determined whether this still was more expensive than the entire trip cost. As high as this cell phone bill was, it still is rather light compared to other people’s misfortunes over the last couple years, which have included bills of as high as $85,000. Let these be a reminder to think twice before even turning that phone on when you arrive in another country.
