Reality Check: Travel Company Launches Hot-Spot Tours
Travel News — By spencerspellman on September 26, 2010 at 10:00 amFor most travelers, traveling is all about escape, whether you’re escaping from a 9-5 job, a freezing cold winter (or blazing hot summer), annoying neighbors, or any other number of reasons. It’s leaving reality for bliss. A new type of travel, referred as “reality trips”, does somewhat the opposite by shedding light on reality.
The Canadian Press reports that this new type of travel is being led by San Francisco human rights organization Global Exchange. The organization is offering locally-led reality tours to globally known hot-spots. Some of the human rights issues these trips cover include civil rights, land-use, the environment, and human and sex trafficking.
Many of these trips take place around the world in places like Afghanistan or the Chiapas state in Mexico and vary in scope. They can include camping under the stars and meeting and volunteering with activist groups. Geared toward the socially conscious individual, these trips raise awareness of issues to the travelers themselves, while also providing opportunities for travelers to raise awareness to neighbors, friends and family once they return home. The Canadian Press reports that it’s made such an impact that it’s starting to get media attention, as it will be featured in an upcoming documentary.
