Iraq, Deprivation Holidays, and Smells Are Some Of The Latest Travel Trends

The World Travel Market bills itself as the “premier global event for the tourism industry” and has recently completed its 2010 exhibit. In a series of press releases, the organization has presented what it thinks are the latest travel trends. Some of these include:

  • Iraq is the next tourist hotspot. Between Iraq’s first attendance in a travel and tourism trade event in 10 years (World Travel Market 2009) and this year’s event, they have seen an increase in airline and hotel capacity. Airlines like Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines have begun flying there again and there are currently several new hotel projects in the works. By 2014 they expect to open 700 hotels. Last year saw 1.3 million visitors to the country, although the majority were religious tourists from Iran.
  • Rich North Americans going on “deprivation” holidays. According to this report, the wealthy are shunning luxury holidays in favor of bootcamp-style vacations. It cites rising obesity and programs like The Biggest Loser as incentives for the rich to spend big cash, as in $5600, for a week full of 10 hour exercise days for the promise to lose 5% body fat.
  • Hotels in Asia will use scents as part of the experience. Popular morning smells are peppermint and citrus, while jasmine and vanilla are favored by those trying to fall asleep. In the report, Euromonitor International Head of Global Travel and Tourism Research Caroline Bremner, states that she could see airlines, tourism boards, and other travel companies getting involved in the trend.
  • South Africa becoming major player in space/astronomy tourism. Partly due to South Africa’s successful hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the nation is positioning itself as the top destination for stargazing. Some hotels are even providing telescopes in their rooms and offering night safaris and tours.
