Beware of Road-Trip Travel Prank Calls

Travel News — By Lia Del Priore on January 10, 2011 at 3:58 pm

Joseph Jones, a 73 year-old man staying at a Motel 6 in South Carolina was the victim of a prank call to top all prank calls.  Jones was awakened from his slumber on a Sunday night by a bizarre phone call from a supposed Motel 6 administrator stating that there were cameras in Jones’ room and that he needed to destroy them. According to The Smoking Gun, Jones was told to smash the television set with the ceramic toilet cover and to smash the mirrors in the room.  The prank call apparently came from PrankNET, the infamous group of pranksters well known for their love of… well, pranks.

According to Fox News, the group attempts to target businesses such as hotels; but really, did they need to pick on a 73 year-old man?  It seems as if their victims are more than just big business.  It has been stated that Jones felt ‘humiliated.’  If they were truly attacking business, wouldn’t they attempt to dupe the actual employees and administrators at the big businesses versus their clients?  As Americans, it’s pretty much guaranteed that we’ve all done our share of prank calling when we were younger.  But when exactly did prank calls become something so serious, especially when you’re just trying to enjoy a relaxing sleep on the road at a Motel 6?
