Road/Sea Trip: Back to the Future HydroCar Listed on Ebay
Travel News — By spencerspellman on January 10, 2011 at 10:09 amOver the years, there have been some strange items listed on Ebay, to say the least. Although not as bizarre as it is unique, we recently came across an automotive listed on Ebay that gives Doc Brown’s DeLorean a run for its money and has us swooning for a fun new travel toy.
According to Switched, this hybrid boat/car, called a HydroCar, was listed on Ebay for $777,000. The auction goes until January 13th and includes a trailer for hauling it. At the time we visited the Ebay listing, it had received 20 offers. This is a unique automotive you aren’t just going to find at CarMax or your local boat show. Owner Rick Dobbertin spent 9 years building the HydroCar, which can be driven both on land and water. With its convertible top, it has the looks of a modern-day DeLorean on pontoons.

As sleek and fast as the HydroCar looks, you won’t be doing much more than cruising along on the water with this hybrid. As Switched reports, despite putting nearly 20,000 hours into it, Dobbertin couldn’t figure out how to make it reach the top speeds that it’s capable of, making it less of Back to the Future’s DeLorean, and more of a two-person party barge. However, what it lacks in practicality, it makes up in cool factor. Nonetheless, you’d be the talk of the town, and the lake, if you won the auction for Dobbertin’s HydroCar.
