Cruise Passenger Arrested for Dealing Drugs (and Other at Sea Adventures)
Travel News — By Carlo Alcos on February 22, 2011 at 10:32 amI guess playing shuffleboard and lounging around aren’t enough excitement for some people. According to CNN.com, Steven Krumholz — a 51 year-old passenger on the Caribbean cruise ship Allure of the Seas — was arrested for dealing drugs from his cabin.
Police were doing a random search when they came across a passenger in the possession of narcotics, who then fingered Mr. Krumholz. He was found with over $51,000 in cash and large amounts of methamphetamine, ecstasy, and ketamine. The ship was chartered by by Atlantis Events in what it described as the “world’s largest gay cruise.”
Here are some other incidents of passengers getting into it with the law:
- In November 2010, a passenger was arrested for “attempting to damage a vessel and endangering a ship’s navigation” when he drunkenly trespassed into a restricted area, dropped anchor, and tossed a life buoy overboard. No damage actually occurred, but this statement was in the affidavit: “releasing an anchor on a moving cruise ship could damage the rudder and propeller, disabling the vessel’s ability to maneuver. It could puncture the ship, causing it to flood or sink.”
- In September 2010, a young mother was arrested and taken away in handcuffs in front of her husband, child, and thousands of other passengers. She was accused of dealing drugs and prostitution. It turned out that it was a case of mistaken identity as she shared the same name with another woman. It was a botched police effort as they didn’t even bother to check birth dates, social security numbers, or residential addresses. She was kept in detention for two days.
- In July 2009, Robert McGill of LA was arrested aboard the Carnival Elation, on suspicion that he murdered his wife after a domestic dispute on the ship. The body was discovered by crew members and McGill was detained in the brig. He later admitted to FBI agents that he killed her with his bare hands in the bathroom.
- In March 2010, Ibrahim Khalil Zarou was arrested in Florida after uttering a bomb-threat on the cruise ship he was on, the Carnival Sensation. Turns out he was just drunk and joking.
