Cruise Renos Gone Bad: Broken Toilets, Leaky Ceilings, No Water
Travel News — By Carlo Alcos on February 23, 2011 at 2:31 pmHere’s a story that would be fit for some kind of nightmare renovations reality-TV show. P&O Cruises recently spent $100 million refurbishing their liner, Pacific Pearl. As reported by the NZ Herald, a trip out of Auckland turned to a disaster for passengers like Walter Florussen, who took his wife on a three-day excursion aboard the ship.
After encountering some poor weather, water was unavailable in the suites and in the public areas for five hours, and there was no coffee in the cafe as the water reserves had been used up. They were also not offered any water by the staff. This came after a night where the toilets weren’t working (staff later blamed the flushing of paper towels, tampons, and hand towels as the cause of the blockage).
In addition, the couple’s ceiling in their suite — as well as in main stairwells — leaked water during the storm. And the latch on their door was broken; the only way to keep it shut was to jam a chair into it. Said Mr. Florussen,
Our travel agent explained that despite the fact the ship was 25 years old, the suites had undergone a major refurbishment. Obviously I’m unhappy with what should have been a wonderful travel experience.
P&O were also looking into how a large and expensive chandelier fell three stories into a cafe on one of its voyages.
