12. Ağva, Turkey
The Wow: The road from Istanbul to Ağva slides through green countryside dotted with vendors selling honey and seasonal produce. Eventually, the modern highway ends and a tiny, cobblestoned village road takes you along the coast to beaches, rivers, little waterfalls, hiking and fishing spots, and green forests.
Why Now? Although it’s a perennial favorite among Istanbul’s working class looking for respite from their grey city, Ağva hasn’t yet been discovered by the international tourist hoards. Expats, however, are beginning to trickle in, and their visiting friends won’t be far behind.
