As a broke college student in Germany, Emily quickly learned the value of riding commuter trains around the country and enjoyed a diet of cheese sandwiches and fresh fruit from local markets. After graduating, a stipend from the German government brought her to Heidelberg, where she spent an additional year studying. She ended up falling in love with the city’s charm and character, and settling in. The festivals and celebrations that seem to take place throughout the year — the castle lighting, the Mannheim-Heidelberg Film Festival, and of course, the Christmas markets — ensure Heidelberg never feels stagnant. The winter brings Emily to her city’s quirky cafes and intriguing museums. The summer brings her to neighboring towns, rich in history and famous for their wines. Graduate school has brought Emily back stateside to Indianapolis, where she continues to write for NileGuide.
