Why Belgians are the Least “Cool” Nationality (and Why They Shouldn’t Be!)

It doesn’t seem like the movie In Bruges did much for Belgium’s cool factor.

At least according to a new survey by social networking site Badoo.com. Belgians, followed by Poles and Turks, were designated as the “least cool” nationalities in the world by 30,000 visitors to the website from 15 countries.

Ouch. With all that good beer and chocolate and everything?

But even the Belgium Tourism Office wasn’t surprised. One of their coordinators, Katie Papadopoulos, said:

“A lot of people just don’t know or are not familiar with Belgium, Belgian people or Belgian culture. Mostly, I think it’s a lack of understanding or awareness.”

Given, Belgium is not necessarily the first stop on most people’s European tour, and it hasn’t gone down in Hollywood history like Italy, France, or even the UK.

But beyond those thick Belgian fries and better-than-Swiss chocolate, Belgium is where the Smurfs originated, they are the true birthplace of Brussels sprouts, and in 2003, they became the second country in the world to legalize same-sex marriages.

Plus, there are over 800 varieties of beer brewed in Belgium. We’re sure at least a few of those are gluten-free.

Maybe they won’t take over Americans, Brazilians, or Spaniards as one of the coolest of the world’s nationalities, but Belgium may be “fast becoming the destination in Europe for anyone seeking fun and adventure.” Well, at least according to the Visit Belgium website.
