More and more it seems the end really is near. Yes, friends, Marmite is officially off the shelves in New Zealand.
Sure, it sounds like it won’t be forever. But who can we trust these days? After the February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, the Marmite factory was damaged. Yet we thought everything would be back to normal by the end of the year. Alas, the building was closed in November for further safety concerns.
Now, the shelves have been cleared by customers because of the shortage. As Jaunted so aptly named it, it’s ‘Marmageddon’!
‘Hold on, now’, you may be saying. ‘Don’t they make Marmite in Britain?’ Sure they do. But is it the same yeasty goodness?
Nope. The two come from different recipes, and are owned by different companies. So don’t think you can just get on Amazon.uk and survive the Marmite-apocalypse. You must also ration what you have, or simply go without.
Marmite’s NZ producers, Sanitarium, hope to have the shelves restocked by July. Sure they do. Sure they do.
Well, we guess there is one other option. Cooks are coming out of the woodwork with recipes. This one, from the Marmite Lover, seems like it’s pretty close to the real deal.
Alternately, you die-hards can start bidding on eBay.
