If Gateway National Recreation Area seems too remote (it is a bit of a haul by public transportation), don’t worry: there’s camping in the heart of Manhattan, too, though it’s more difficult to secure a spot to pop your tent here as camping permits are given just one night a month during summer and campsites are assigned by luck of the draw lotteries. If you can’t score a spot in Central Park, the city’s outer boroughs have similar lotteries.
