Description:
Set aside a night for The Tavern, for having dinner in the town's oldest building is an essential part of the Abingdon experience. The Tavern was built in 1779 as an inn for stagecoach travelers. Exposed brick and stone walls, log beams, and hand-forged locks and hinges make it seem little changed since then. Despite the indoor charm, choice warm-weather tables are on an upstairs porch or on the brick terrace under a canopy of towering trees. The menu reflects gregarious German-born owner Max Hermann's well-traveled background, with Wiener schnitzel, baked salmon sprinkled with Thai spices, chicken saltimbocca, and medallions of beef with a French influence.
