- Bitumen was first discovered in Nigeria in 1900 with subsequent geological survey showing large deposit across Edo, Ondo, Ogun and Lagos States. The survey indicates further that the deposit is in commercial quantity, and that Okitipupa Local Government is in the (BEECON), a private bitumen mining company has recently commenced exploitation of its allocated block which falls within the Local Government Area. For the purpose of emphasis, the bitumen deposit runs from Edo State through Okitipupa, Irele and Ilaje Governments in Ondo State is reputed to be largest in the world.
