Salin d'Aigues-Mortes

Salin d'Aigues-Mortes - Aigues Mortes
  • Type: Attractions
  • NileGuide Expert Says:

The town of Aigues-Mortes is a beautiful spot. A historical site that is home to a 13th Century fort, it is well worth a visit.

  • Description:

    • Mountains of salt and salt beds extend over several hundred hectares around the town of Aigues-Mortes. This valuable product was already intensely harvested from the area in Roman times. Today the annual production of the Compagnie des Salins du Midi is between 8.75 and 11.5 metric tons (300,000 and 400,000 tons) (corresponding to about 90 percent of the sea salt production of France) and is marketed under the distinctive brand name of La Baleine. A little train leaves the entrance to the Salin d'Aigues-Mortes (where there is free parking) for a tour of about one hour.
