Description:

  • The train link from Tel Aviv to the north makes a journey to Akko quick (approximately 90 minutes) and pleasant. This is a walled port city on the Mediterranean coast, with a yachting marina and a rich history. Over the centuries Akko has belonged to the Greeks, Egyptians, Crusaders, Arabs, Turks and British. These layers of history make a walk around the Old City very atmospheric. There is an underground Crusader city to see as well as the Al-Jazzar mosque from Ottoman times and the Akko Citadel, which served as a prison. A short ride north of Akko is Kibbutz Lohamei Haghetaot, whose Holocaust museum for children is very moving and worth a visit.
