Nonnahús (Nonni's House)

• This museum is squeezed inside the tiny childhood home of Jón Sveinsson (1857-1944), author of a semi-autobiographical children's book series famous throughout Iceland and Germany. ("Nonni" applies to Jón and his fictional boy-hero.) Jón studied abroad and became a Jesuit priest and missionary. The fictional Nonni, along with his younger brother Manni, live on an isolated north Iceland farm and run into all kinds of family drama and adventure, including a brush with polar bears. The books were written in German, but English translations by a deceased nun were recently published, and are sold at reception. The museum, founded in 1957, is full of manuscripts and personal items. Nonnahús and the Museum of Akureyri offer discounted joint admission.
