Description:

  • The earl of Dorset owned this 1526 manor house before it was sold to the Shelley family, wealthy Sussex landowners (and relatives of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley). Radical changes were made to the architecture in the 18th century. A complete refurbishment has turned the hotel into a two-restaurant luxurious country-house retreat. There are traditional details throughout, such as the family coat of arms in the central hall. The standards of the management are reflected in the fine antiques, bowls of flowers, paintings and prints, well-kept gardens and, most important, helpful staff. The bedrooms are personal, individually furnished, usually spacious, and most comfortable.
