Nuraghe Palmavera

Description:

  • The duke of Buckingham dubbed these caves "the miracle of the gods." This is the best place on the island to see prehistoric stone-built nuraghe, some 50 individual dwellings crowded close together. A central tower surrounds these huts, forming a limestone complex from 1500 B.C. Built with huge blocks of stone, the truncated cone tower is in the shape of a beehive and opens onto a panorama of the countryside. The remains of a "palace" founded in the 14th century B.C. can also be seen. The Nuragic civilization produced the most advanced and monumental architecture of this early period in the western Mediterranean.
