  • While Amalfi's beaches are one of its most tempting features, this little town packs a historical punch that many visitors miss. Climb the grand staircase of the Duomo of Amalfi and visit the Cloister of Paradise where the noble families of Amalfi were buried in the Middle Ages. Don't miss the excellent Duomo Museum filled with artistic and religious treasures that tell the story of Amalfi's important past. Also inside the church, visit the crypt of Sant' Andrea Apostolo, Amalfi's patron saint and protector.

The Museo della Carta (Paper Museum) is a small museum located in the ruins of a paper mill located near the top of Amalfi. Learn about Amalfi's fascinating history as an important papermaking center in Europe on the guided tours at this fun and interesting museum. Continue your exploration of Amalfi's past by hiking up into the Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills) where you can see the ruins of the town's once prosperous paper mills.

For Medieval history fans, visit the Museo Civico where you can see important documents dating back to the Republic of Amalfi in the Middle Ages, including the Tabula Amalphitana (Amalfi Tables), which established a maritime code that was used throughout the Mediterranean until 1570. Next, go and peek inside the Arsenale, where Amalfi's trading ships were built in the Middle Ages.

Once of the best things to do to experience Amalfi's historical presence is to explore the labyrinth of tiny streets, staircases and covered walkways. Stop in some of the charming piazzas, like the Piazza dello Spirito Santo or Piazza dei Dogi, for a drink or an outdoor meal surrounded by the historical ambiance of this seaside town.
