NileGuide Expert tip:

Tefé and Mamirauá is on a white water river, the Solimões. For the practically-minded traveler this means one thing – lots of biting insects. So, make sure you have long-sleeved, lightweight, shirts and long-trousers, or have a repellent you works for you (your skin chemistry is as individual as you are). If you don't like DEET or other man-made chemicals, try citronella, or eating lots of garlic or marmite.

Tefé is the largest city of the Solimões river. Though founded in 17th century and with a smattering of interesting buildings, it is today a boom town based on natural gas exploitation  of the Urucu gas field. Timber is also important. However, for most visitors, Tefé is just a entrepot to the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve. This 5700 ha  reserve embodies the approach of working with the local inhabitants to achieve. The reserve provides a safe and well-organized way to see flooded forest (or the extensive várzea kind) and its endemic white uacaris (a strange bob-tailed white monkey with a naked red head) as well as a great diversity of bird-life, and great numbers of dolphins and river otters,
