  • NileGuide Expert Says:

    Amsterdam's Best Brown Bar

  • NileGuide Expert tip:

On Saturday evenings, an accordion player sets the mood with sea-faring music.

    Description:

    • The name means "in the monkeys," and there are a few different colorful tales offering an explanation of that name. You can ask the barman to fill you in on the details, but they all come to the same ending: the bar used to be filled with monkeys. Nowadays you won't find any live monkeys there, but plenty of monkey figurines. This is one of the prettiest and most historic brown bars in the city. In addition to its monkey affiliation, this is also one of only two wooden front houses left after Amsterdam's many fires and subsequent law banning building with wood. This building dates from 1503.
