Amsterdam has a number of restaurant's which are easy on the wallet, without compromising on quality. You simply need to know where to find these cheap eats as they're often off the beaten track and need to work that little bit harder to attract their regulars.
Traditional Dutch food is rather flat, and usually consists of a mix of mashed potatoes with some vegetable and a meat ball on top. This is why the Dutch have appropriated the food of their former colony, Indonesia, as their own. Indonesian restaurants are common in Amsterdam, and the staple dish of Kip Sate (chicken in a peanut sauce) has even made it to Dutch menus. Turkish and other Middle Eastern delights, as well as excellent Thai and Chinese food are also very popular, fresh and cheap.
Of course, no trip to a new city is complete without trying some of the traditional cuisine, so make sure you try some pancakes (either sweet for desert or savory for your main course). And don't forget the apple pie.
