The exceptional service at this intimate boutique hotel on one of Amsterdam's most prestigious canals wins justified raves from its primarily American and British guests. Its Asian-influenced decor is arguably the most stylish in town. The Dylan began life as a 17th-century concert hall and theater (Vivaldi once conducted here); its serene black-and-white Dylan Lounge still sports the theater's original brick floor. All the guest rooms and suites have the usual array of luxury amenities and are individually decorated with different colors and themes; no. 5, for example, is a blue Japanese-style room with a deep soaking tub and traditional sliding screens. Only three rooms have a canal view, so if this is important to you, specify it. Style here occasionally trumps substance -- the water fountain-style sinks in a few of the rooms look grand, but their design makes them somewhat hard to use.
