De Plantage: Amsterdam

The Plantage, or "plantation" is one of Amsterdam's first suburbs, and is named after the botanical and herb gardens that were popular here in the 1800s. The Artis, or zoo, was opened in 1838 and remains at the heart of the Plantage to this day. The Hortus Botanicus (Botanical Gardens) are next door, and contain some interesting species of plants brought to Amsterdam by the major shipping company, the Dutch East India Company (VOC).

The University of Amsterdam has many buildings around the Plantage, and as a result, many student cafes and bars are in the neighborhood. The Kriterion is a place where intellectuals meet for coffee or to play some of the many board games scattered around the café. Most importantly, the Kirterion is the city's main alternative cinema, with interesting films from all over the world.

If you travel east of the Plantage, you will find some interesting sites visited by the locals. Commonly referred to as Amsterdam Oost (Amsterdam East), the neighborhood is named after the Oosterpark (Eastern Park). The park was built in the 1880s for the many diamond industry workers that lived in the neighborhood. Even though Oosterpark is smaller than Amsterdam's famous Vondelpark, it's not as crowded, so you'll be able to find some privacy for a nice picnic. Near the Oosterpark is the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam's cultural/anthropological museum. The Dappermarkt, a daily market frequented by the locals for its cheap groceries and random items, is also walking distance from the park.

The neighborhood also has some exciting nightlife. Hotel Arena is a hotel, restaurant and club located in an old church, hosting weekly 80s and 90s themed parties.
