- Calling it a cafe really doesn't do justice to Cafe American—this is not only the oldest Grand Cafe in the Netherlands, but both the building and its interior are listed monuments and it's easy to see why. The interior is impressive, to say the least, with beautiful stained glass windows, huge murals and quite stunning chandeliers. An antique reading table is also present, well-stocked with the latest newspapers and magazines. In true American style, the cafe has a separate non-smoking area, and to top it off, there is a large terrace that gives a good view of the Leidseplein. This place is definitely one to visit.

Not worth to stay in the hotel, but a visit to the cafe should be on your list. The grand cafe room is very nice, location in the city is very good. Go to the very small park nearby...

We had a dinner at another restaurant and just had drinks at the bar. Friendly staff and nice interior in this old and historic building.
