Café Luxembourg

• "One of the world's great cafes," the New York Times called this bohemian, see-and-be-seen grand cafe, where waitstaff wear starched white aprons. Unlike other Amsterdam cafes, which often draw distinctive clientele, Luxembourg attracts all kinds of people because it offers amazingly large portions of food at reasonable prices. Soups, sandwiches, and dishes such as meatloaf are available. Especially appealing are specials like the Chinese dim sum and the satay ajam (Indonesian grilled chicken in peanut sauce). Sundays in particular, but also on other days, it's a relaxing place to do breakfast with one of the many international papers available here and a cup of strong coffee; diners are encouraged to linger. In summer, there's sidewalk dining.
