Worth the 10 muinute trip on the free ferry

Description:

• Restaurant Noorderlicht, meaning Northern Lights has one of the best views of Amsterdam's river skyline, from the North side of the river Ij behind Central Station. It is built in a huge poly-tunnel right on the edge of the water, and is lit up with stunning colours at night. It is also located next to a complex of artists studios, so the after-work crowd is a slightly more arty type, or students. There's a very laid back friendly atmosphere. The menu changes weekly and covers all regions of the world. All the food is fresh and main courses start at around Euro 12. It's great value for Amsterdam. Be warned, that the service can sometimes be as relaxed as the customers.
  
  The location, directly on the Ij river, can't be beaten. It's one of the best places to watch the sunset over Amsterdam. On a hot day, it's a great place to escape the heat of the city and enjoy the terrace right on the river... although terrace might be a little exaggerating. Outside is really just a grassy area with picnic tables, blankets and every now and then a few armchairs.
  
  At night in the summer there's often a campfire and someone almost always has a guitar with them.
  
  To reach this restaurant you have to take the free ferry signposted NDSM Werf from behind Central Station. After you leave the ferry, take the first road you come to on the right and walk about 400 metres. You'll see the restaurant, located in a large poly-tunnel on the right side. Don't give up. At first you might think you're lost on an industrial terrain, but it's well worth the effort.
