Description:
If the name of this tree-shaded, animated cafe-restaurant on Vondelpark's edge suggests a high location, the reality is far less giddy -- in terms of altitude, at least. The reference is to Hitchcock's classic movie. In the vaulted basement of a monumental, late-19th-century villa, Vertigo shares premises with the Film Museum. Hence the portraits of screen legends on the walls and the classic scenes of movie dining on the menu. On summer days, the terrace is a favored time-out spot for in-line skaters and joggers; a restricted menu is served here, where you can expect to share your table and make instant acquaintance of just about everyone within earshot. On summer evenings, you might even be able to take in an open-air movie. At other times, enjoy the south-Europe cuisine in an intimate indoor candlelit setting. The menu, which changes every 6 to 8 weeks, lists fish, meat, and vegetarian options, plus some fresh pasta varieties. If you see grilled breast of guinea fowl on the menu, go for it!
