Description:

The Waddenzee, or Wadden Sea, is an intertidal zone along the northern coast of the Netherlands and the Frisian islands. It forms a shallow body of water with tidal flats and wetlands, and experiences dramatic water level changes during high and low tide. In 2009 it was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List. A very popular past-time with the Dutch is wadlopen (mud walking), and involves walking on the muddy sea floor during low tide. Various tour companies operate out of small towns along the northern coast of the Netherlands, offering both hikes along the coast, and crossings to one of the Frisian islands.
