Description:
There are few traditional dishes in The Netherlands, but most are dishes that are available in many European countries - with a unique twist.
One truly Dutch dish is stampot - mashed potatoes mixed with leek and a meatball or sausage on top. If this sounds too exotic, then one of the many types of pancakes with unique topping combinations should satisfy any pallet - be it sweet or savory. Traditional desert is apple pie and the beverage of choice is beer.
Because of the fact that Indonesia is a former colony of the Netherlands, there is a large Indonesian population in Amsterdam. There is also a variety of Indonesian restaurants to chose from, and some Indonesian dishes have permanently made their way into Dutch cuisine. Make sure you try the kip-sate (chicken in a peanut sauce) - it's delicious.

The Best Apple Pie in Town
Description:
Winkel 43 is a small café tucked away in the corner of the Noordermarkt. On a market day you can go shopping at all the interesting arts & crafts and food stalls, or at one of the many small shops in the neighborhood. But make sure you stop at Winkel 43 or you'll miss out on the best apple pie in town. This title is bestowed on the pie by the Dutch themselves, so the place is always packed.

Description:
This rather large Indonesian restaurant, in which all food is authentically prepared, is located in the very heart of Amsterdam. Both the interior and the cuisine are reflections of the rich Indonesian culinary tradition. The original sate platters are excellent, with five different ones available. Main courses include various red meat, chicken, egg, fish or vegetable dishes as well as the traditional nasi or bami dishes. Particularly noteworthy are their rice-tables.

Best pancakes!
Description:
Climb the very narrow stairs and you will find yourself in Pannenkoeken Upstairs, quite possibly Amsterdam's smallest restaurant, and definitely the best place to get pancakes. Located in one room with only a few tables, you can chat with the owner as he prepares your pancake in a small corner of the room. From the ceiling hang many teapots, adding to the offbeat, quirky style of this restaurant.
