Description:
Originally a flour mill, this property (part of a chain noted for its tranquillity) is the premier place to stay and dine in this area. It's surrounded by 32 hectares (79 acres) of lowlands (including a garden, a creek, and open fields), about half of which are devoted to the production of cognac. The maître d'hôtel's preferred brand is the one made nearby, Domaine du Maine-Brun. These are the most luxurious accommodations around, larger than the lodgings at many competitors; each has a terrace. Rooms are individually decorated with 18th- and 19th-century French furniture. The restaurant serves splendid fare. Specialties include terrine of foie gras with cognac, and Porée charentaise, a combination of fish in a creamy Pineau wine sauce. Main courses range from 30€ to 40€ ($44-$58).
