Things to Do Near Downtown, Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda

  • Visitors to Antigua will be able to enjoy an endless variety of activities and attractions as they explore this beautiful Caribbean island.

    A great way to get around Antigua is by renting a scooter for the day - they're inexpensive and allow you to visit attractions at your leisure. Be sure to visit Heritage Quay for the island's best duty-free shopping, stop at the Botanical Gardens and St. John's Cathedral, and explore Shirley Heights Lookout.

    Other important stops around Antigua should include historical Nelson's Dockyard and English Harbour, Long Bay Beach, and Devil's Bridge, Fig Tree Drive and Betty's Hope Sugar Plantation.

    Indian Town National Park, Fort James, and Green Castle Hill make for wonderful sightseeing stops as you explore the island.

    With an abundance of flora and fauna, nature lovers will be more than impressed with the island of Antigua. Birdwatchers can take advantage of the day tours scheduled to Barbuda where 170 species of birds can be found at the Frigate Bird Sanctuary. While hiking around Fort George and Fort Barrington, lucky hikers might view an Antiguan racer snake, lizards, or deer. You can also view the wildlife and tropical foliage by taking a thrilling rain forest canopy tour.

    Scuba diving and snorkeling are both excellent ways to discover what's beneath the ocean while visiting Antigua. Expect to see coral reefs, hawksbill turtles, wrecks, and a rainbow of tropical fish. Other water activities on Antigua include swimming, boating, sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, and deep sea fishing. Even though going on a catamaran cruise may seem like a typical tourist activity, it really is a perfect way to see the wealth of magnificent beaches that Antigua has to offer.

    View the cultural side of Antigua by visiting the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda in St. John's, the Harmony Hall Art Gallery in Brown's Bay, and the beautiful pottery offered at the Sea View Farm located southwest of St. John's.

    While on Antigua, do as the locals do and take in a cricket match at the Antigua Recreation Ground in St. John's; official matches are typically held on Thursdays and the weekends. If you'd rather swing your own stick, enjoy a round of golf at one of two 18-hole island courses.
